We Are Very Pleased to Have Received
This Photo of 149802 By Andrew A. Markus

Thank
You Andrew for This Rare and Important Photo
Dear Nick,
In 1964 and '65, I served in avionics in VMGR-152. After coming back
stateside, I completed my enlistment in VMGR-252. I have always been proud
of my service and frequently surf the net to discover stories about the
Corps and particularly those about Marine Air during the Vietnam era. I ran
across this site recently and was fascinated by all it contained.
While at Iwakuni in early '65 to preserve some memories, I took this picture
of 802 on the flight line. It was shortly after we redeployed to Futema
that 802 was lost in Hong Kong. That was a sobering time for many of us
since we knew the crew members who were lost and those that survived. I
distinctly recall working on and flying in that ship just a couple of weeks
before it went down.
Some years ago I happened upon a photo of a young Marine in the newspaper
here in Denver. The photo of him was in tropicals which were from my era
and which consequently piqued my interest. I read how his name had been put
on The Wall at that time because he had been a victim of a plane disaster in
Hong Kong while returning to service in Vietnam. I immediately knew to what
the article was referring. I cut out that article and have kept it to this
day.
My wife is in education and recently took some middle school children to
Washington. They visited The Wall, and I had her locate his name so that
the children knew he was from Denver. I also told her that those named with
him would have included a couple of Marines that I had served with.
I have attached the photo of 802 for your inclusion in the website should
you so choose. Please let me know if there are any problems in its
transfer.
Semper Fi,
Andrew A. Markus
Remembering All Who Have
Given Their All
I recently
received this newspaper clipping from Andrew Markus. He had seen this
article on Veterans day in 1983. He kept the article for over 20 years.
I am posting this article here, as it is a true piece of the history for this
aircraft.
In reading the
article, I found it hard to believe that the DOD would make an attempt to use
Marines like PFC Jack B. Leaf and many others like him to "Define" a war
casualty. We thank Jack and his family for his service.
