us This Information on 149791:
Thanks Again Delbert
A/C 791 was transfered to the
Blue Angels in the late 80's.
They needed a replacement A/C as
149806 was scheduled for rework.
At that time it was assigned to
VMGR-234, MACG-48 at NAS
Glenview. I checked into the
unit in Aug. of '87. The
squadron had five F models and
the rest were T models, 162308
thru 163311. We transfered the
five F models to make room for
the new T's that were still
coming off the line at Lockheed.
Update Received on November
21, 2006 From Don Diamond
Thank You Don
Don
sends in the following timeline
denoting the use of this
aircraft during the Vietnam war.
We thank Don and his fellow
Marines for their service past
and preseant.
I checked my log book and
found several missions in which
I flew on that plane in Viet Nam
in 1968. On August 15, 1968
through August 19th, with Major
Roder and Major Burrows
piloting, we flew from Danag to
Futema, Okinawa, then back to
Danang, Dong Ha, Phu Bai, An Hoa,
and on the 19th refueled one A-4
Skyhawk near Danang.
I then flew on the plane on
October 8 -10, 1968 from Futema
to Danang and then to Hong Kong.
I have to look, I believe I have
a slide of the plane taken in
Hong Kong at the airport. Major
Deornellis and Major Mullins
were the pilots. We then
returned to Danang and back to
Futema.
On November 11, 1968 with
Major Wallace and Major Garriott
piloting, we flew the plane from
Danang to Tai Pei, Formosa and
then on to Futema.
Back in Danang on November
14th, with Major WIlson and
Capt. Powers we flew it on an
aerial refueling mission, and on
the 15th we went on a night
flare drop mission for 5.5
hours.
That is all I have in my log
book for that aircraft, but to
answer your question, yes, it
was used by VMGR152 in Viet Nam
in 1968.
A special Thank You goes to
Retired Major Grady Loveless,
who sent the following
information in connection to the
question listed below.
A couple of the original
KC-130's were in regular service
before
going to the Blue Angels. The
crews never went with them as no
crews
were assigned to any aircraft
other than the VIP ship for Gen
Krulak.
Even those crews were rotated
occasionally.
WAS THIS
AIRPLANE EVER USED OUTSIDE OF
BLUE ANGELS
SUPPORT ?
Anyone with stories about this
plane are encouraged to send
them to Nick for postings. Also
any other photo's of this plane
or the crew's that flew her.
